What is it ?

Why does my back hurt?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to see us, and in a city where we spend long hours at desks, on our phones and in transit, it’s no surprise. Most back pain comes from muscles, joints and ligaments under strain, rather than anything serious, and it usually responds well to the right care. Common triggers include sitting for long periods, lifting or twisting awkwardly, sports and training, poor sleep, stress, and pregnancy or the postnatal months. Sometimes the pain is in one spot; sometimes it travels into the buttock or down the leg, as with sciatica. Our approach looks beyond the sore spot to how your whole body moves, so we can ease the pain now and help stop it coming back.

Back pain we help with

Every back is different, so your treatment is tailored to your symptoms, lifestyle and goals. Here are some of the most common types of back pain we see.
Lower back pain:Aching, stiffness or sharp pain in the lower back, often after sitting, lifting or a busy week. Osteopathy can help ease tension and restore movement.
Sciatica and leg pain:Pain, tingling or numbness that travels from your lower back into your buttock or down your leg. We assess where it’s coming from and use gentle techniques to help ease pressure and discomfort.
Upper back and neck tension:Tightness between the shoulder blades and into the neck, common with desk work, phone use and stress.
Sports and gym injuries:Strains from running, lifting, golf, tennis or hiking. We help you recover and return to your sport safely.
Pregnancy and postnatal back pain:Back and pelvic pain as your body changes before and after birth, treated with gentle, pregnancy-safe techniques.
Recurring or long-term back pain:Pain that keeps coming back. We combine osteopathy with clinical Pilates to build strength and resilience, so you’re less likely to have the next flare-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the questions we’re asked most often about back pain. If yours isn’t here, message us on WhatsApp and we’ll be happy to help.

What happens at my first appointment?
Your osteopath starts by asking about your pain, your health and your daily routine, then assesses how your back and body move. They’ll explain what’s likely causing your pain and, if osteopathy is right for you, begin treatment in the same session. You’ll leave with simple advice to help you between visits.

Should I see an osteopath or rest my back?
Gentle movement usually helps back pain recover faster than bed rest. An osteopath can help ease the pain, show you which movements are safe and guide you back to your normal activities.

Can osteopathy help with sciatica?
Many people with sciatica find osteopathy helpful. Your osteopath will assess where your symptoms are coming from and use gentle techniques to help ease pressure, pain and stiffness.

What’s the difference between osteopathy and clinical Pilates?
Osteopathy is hands-on treatment to ease pain and restore movement. Clinical Pilates is guided exercise to build the strength and control that support your spine. Many people find the two work best together: osteopathy to get you moving, and Pilates to keep you there.

I injured my back playing sport. Can you help?
Yes. Our osteopaths regularly treat back strains from running, lifting, golf, tennis and hiking, and help you return to your sport safely. Many clients also combine treatment with sports massage to ease tight muscles and support recovery.

Can I get back pain treatment during pregnancy or after birth?
Yes. Our osteopaths use gentle, pregnancy-safe techniques to ease back and pelvic pain as your body changes. You may also find pregnancy massage soothing, and after birth, pelvic floor rehabilitation helps rebuild core strength to support your back.

My teenager has back pain. Do you see children?
Yes. Back and neck pain from growth spurts, sport and heavy school bags is common in teens. Find out more about osteopathy for children.

Do I need a scan or referral?
No, you can book directly. Most back pain doesn’t need a scan, but if you already have X-rays, MRI results or medical reports, please bring them along. If we think you need further tests, we’ll let you know.

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your symptoms and goals. Your osteopath will discuss a plan with you at your first visit and review your progress as you go.

What should I wear?
Whatever feels comfortable for you. We can provide shorts and a T-shirt for you to change into before your session, or you’re welcome to wear or bring your own loose clothing.

Is it covered by insurance?
Many health insurance plans cover osteopathy. Check your policy, and our team can provide receipts for your claim.

When should I see a doctor?
Most back pain isn’t serious, but see a doctor straight away if you have numbness around your groin or bottom, new problems controlling your bladder or bowels, weakness in your legs that is getting worse, a fever, or back pain after a fall or accident.
